In recent times, there has been an inter-generational debate that ‘slanguage’ created on the internet, is sabotaging the English language. I disagree. Language is always changing, always evolving to reflect what’s happening in culture. We must also acknowledge that this is no recent development. For centuries, the use of ‘slanguage’ has been able to reflect changes in society and culture. ‘Sabotage’ studies the co-evolution of slang and culture, and the idea that ‘slanguage’ has become a carrier of culture - constantly changing with society and revealing the attitudes of the culture that use these words. Whether you think internet slang strengthens or destroys language, there remains the unavoidable truism that it reflects and encapsulates the society within which it is born. So is internet slang sabotaging the English language? Naaaah….
